Venture Capital Trusts

Venture Capital Trusts are investment companies listed on the Stock Exchange. They were first introduced in 1995 with the aim of encouraging private investors to support young growth orientated British companies. As well as the potential for high returns from these types of companies, you are offered significant tax breaks to invest.

There are distinct sets of tax benefits for investing in a VCT: one set only applying on subscription for new shares. These benefits apply on investments of up to £200,000 each tax year.

On subscription for new VCT shares:

- Income tax relief – up to 30% up front in the year of subscription, providing the shares are held for at least five years.

On subscription and on purchase in the market:

- All capital gains make within a VCT are free of CGT.

- All dividends paid by the VCT are free of income tax.

- No CGT is payable on gains made on the sale of VCT Shares
